GYULA LESTYÁN
ZBK kempo – 2th kyu
Founder of St Albans Kempo club

I started my martial art journey in 2006 when I was at university. My original interest was in boxing but I quickly realised that ZBK Kempo can give way more than boxing. Not only because it covers wider variety of techniques but also the deep meaning of the martial art. Thanks to my history in multiple sports, I quickly progressed in gradings and started to compete in full contact fights relatively soon. The numerous fights over the years under different rules gave me the experience to understand what actually works in a stress situation. With that experience and multiple years of practice, I built my knowledge in kempo what provides the basis of my teaching.
Moving to the UK in 2015, I was practicing other martial arts such as boxing, Thai boxing, Brazilian jiu-jitsu and judo. The experience in those martial arts helped me to improve my techniques, see the differences between various martial arts and build certain elements into my kempo.
In my view, the beauty of ZBK Kempo is that it is probably the most comprehensive martial arts covering all elements of fighting. Everyone can find their own way of doing kempo acknowledging that no one is going to be perfect in every single element of it. Kempo is about to lift others up instead of pushing them down. In kempo we say, ‘Do your best in the worst situation’ and ‘Give way so as to conquer’.
Currently, I have 2th kyu for which I have graded for in 2023.
Although St Albans kempo club is the first club led by myself, I helped my former club’s instructor in holding trainings. I am a member of BMABA and achieved level two instructor grading in 2025.
